First Minister Highlights North West Economic Momentum at Derry Chamber Event
First Minister Michelle O'Neill addressed over 200 business leaders, political representatives and civic stakeholders at the Derry Chamber of Commerce President's Lunch in the Millennium Forum. The event carried the theme of driving regional delivery for national impact.
O'Neill stated that the North West plays a vital role in economic growth. She noted investments in regional strengths, business expansion and innovation create opportunities across Northern Ireland.
She pointed to momentum from Ulster University's Magee expansion, the Derry and Strabane City Deal, and local business ambitions supported by the Chamber.
Junior Minister Joanne Bunting commended the Chamber for supporting businesses and promoting growth in Londonderry and the North West. She affirmed the Executive's commitment to unlocking economic potential and investment.
Chamber President Steven Lindsay outlined recent local investments. These include Dunnes Stores' €15m redevelopment of its Foyleside store, Vertiv's expansion adding around 200 jobs due to AI and data centre demand, and support for firms like Optik AI.
Lindsay observed growing momentum from new investments, job creation, Ulster University Magee expansion and City Deal progress.
The programme featured a conversation between Bubblebum founder Gráinne Kelly and host Jim Fitzpatrick. A panel included Jennifer Neff of Hightop, Department for the Economy Permanent Secretary Ian Snowden, Ulster University Principal Economist Myles Patton, and Leap Forward's Paul McElvaney.
Ulster University Provost Cathy Gormley Heenan emphasised the institution's commitment to economic growth and innovation in Derry-Londonderry through teaching, research and partnerships with the Chamber.
