Stormont Public Accounts Committee Recalls Department of Health Officials on GP Access Issues
Northern Ireland's Public Accounts Committee has called senior Department of Health officials to its meeting on Thursday, 26 March. The session follows the committee's rejection of the department's update on recommendations to improve access to general practitioner services.
The committee reviewed the department's response on 12 February. Members found it lacked urgency, clarity, and credible timelines for action. They noted implementation dates stretching years ahead without justification or interim measures.
PAC chair Daniel McCrossan MLA contacted Department of Health permanent secretary Mike Farrar in February. The letter asked senior officials to appear in person and explain the department's stance.
In December 2025, the committee released a report on access to general practice. It stated the primary care sector faces crisis conditions with failings in GP service provision. The report listed 10 recommendations.
Evidence for the report drew from stakeholders and submissions by more than 15,000 members of the public on appointment difficulties.
Committee members report continued constituent complaints about GP access problems.
