Tommy Stewart, Boxing Stalwart in North West, Dies
Tommy Stewart, a prominent boxing organiser in the north west, has died. He lived in Strabane for many years with his wife Patricia and daughter Tracey, and later moved to Melmount Manor.
Stewart originated from Derry. He served as a founding member of Raphoe Boxing Club in 1988 and later as President of the Donegal Boxing Board. He contributed to Strabane Ventures Boxing Club in the 1980s and Oakleaf Boxing Club in Derry.
His coaching extended to teams from Northern Ireland and Ireland. He worked with boxer Danny Ryan, who won multiple Ulster and Irish titles in amateur and professional levels.
In 2017, the Ulster Boxing Council awarded him honorary life membership.
West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan described Stewart as kind, generous with his time, and always willing to help others. McCrossan noted that Stewart prioritised his family above all achievements and was a longtime SDLP member who valued community and fairness.
Stewart's Requiem Mass occurred at St Mary's Church, Melmount on Tuesday, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
McCrossan extended condolences to Stewart's wife Patricia, daughter Tracey, son-in-law Kevin, grandsons Ryan, Aaron and Gavin, and the wider family.
