Fermanagh Volunteer to Begin Midwifery Training After Hospital Experience
A volunteer at the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen will start a midwifery degree at Queen’s University Belfast this September. Amy-Leigh has been gaining experience in the hospital’s maternity ward as part of Volunteers Week 2026.
She has also worked as a Band 2 healthcare assistant at the same hospital for the past two years. This role provided her with general hospital insight, but she sought additional experience in a maternity setting.
As a volunteer, she assists maternity support workers with tasks such as making tea and toast for new mothers, stocking rooms, and spending time talking to patients.
Amy-Leigh said she enjoys supporting both new mothers and staff. She added that volunteering has reinforced her desire to become a midwife and given her valuable understanding of the role.
She encouraged others interested in healthcare to volunteer, saying that the experience is rewarding and helps build knowledge before starting formal training.
The Western Trust is marking Volunteers Week by highlighting the contributions of volunteers like Amy-Leigh. Information on volunteering roles at the hospital can be obtained by emailing volunteering@westerntrust.hscni.net or calling 028 7161 1155.
