Fermanagh and Omagh Council Bid for St Lucia Barracks Site Rejected by Stormont
Stormont officials rejected a bid by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to acquire St Lucia Barracks in Omagh. The council submitted a formal expression of interest to the Department of Finance's Strategic Asset Management Unit. That unit now seeks alternative offers from the community and voluntary sectors before a potential open market sale.
The barracks on Derry Road served as a British Army base from 1881 to 2007. The site includes historic barracks, officer buildings, and derelict family accommodation. Council officials plan to resubmit interest at the next stage.
Under the council's Place Shaping for 2035 strategy, the site was targeted for mixed-use development. Plans included visitor accommodation, a heritage interpretation centre, expansion for South West College, and an events space. The council's interest focused first on land for the Omagh riverside walk and the full site.
Vandalism has affected parts of the site. An arson attack occurred last year on land controlled by the Department for Infrastructure. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins stated her officials held meetings on site security and offered assistance for areas under their control.
