Castlederg Businesses Close Amid Slow Public Realm Works
Construction work in Castlederg, County Tyrone, has led local businesses to close temporarily due to reduced footfall. The latest phase of the Castlederg Public Realm regeneration project began in January as part of the wider Derg Active Scheme.
Harold Moore of The Pet Store and Urban Barn giftware shut his doors when works took place directly outside the premises. He welcomes investment in the town but noted the pace has been slow.
Erinn Duffy, who helps run Wee Buns Cafe in the town centre, reported a sharp decline in takings compared to last January. Customers have asked about access, and the cafe closed early last week after footfall dropped following a new menu launch. Staff have been sent home early, and Duffy highlighted hazards like a large hole near bins and difficulties with deliveries.
Ulster Unionist councillor Derek Hussey, a local business owner, said residents seek clarity on completion dates. The full £6.5m project, funded by the UK Government Levelling Up Fund and Derry City and Strabane District Council, was due to finish this month, though Hussey doubts that timeline. Over £5,000 has improved the central diamond area.
Derry City and Strabane District Council plans a meeting this week with affected businesses and contractors to update on progress and resolve issues.
