Justice Minister Naomi Long Launches Victims and Witnesses Strategy 2026-2032
Justice Minister Naomi Long has released the Victims and Witnesses Strategy 2026-2032. The plan seeks to enhance support for victims and witnesses in the justice system through a trauma-informed approach.
Long launched the strategy at the Long Gallery in Parliament Buildings. She stated that the actions will prevent the justice system from worsening the harm caused by crime. The minister added that it will bring improvements for victims and witnesses and boost confidence in the justice system.
The strategy supports goals for efficient justice delivery, victim support, and reduced re-offending. It aligns with Programme for Government aims for safer communities and ending violence against women and girls. Long noted that it reflects input from victims and witnesses who shared their experiences, along with public consultations.
Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton attended the launch. He said the police service welcomes the strategy and aims to support victims with compassion to keep them engaged in the process.
Geraldine Hanna, Victim of Crime Commissioner Designate, also attended. She called the strategy a key step in addressing victims' rights and needs, while noting challenges in turning commitments into action.
