Justice Minister Naomi Long Launches Legal Aid Reform Consultations
Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long has published two public consultation papers on legal aid reforms. The papers are part of the Department of Justice's Enabling Access to Justice programme.
The consultations seek input on simplifying and accelerating legal aid application processes. Long said legal aid helps those unable to afford legal assistance or representation access justice when needed. She added that it forms a key element of an effective justice system.
A recent Department of Justice review, which included a call for evidence and stakeholder input, identified the current system as slow and complex. Respondents indicated that financial eligibility rules often deter people from applying.
The department has proposed options to improve financial eligibility tests, including those for asylum seekers and immigrants. Consultations also cover legal aid access for domestic abuse victims and rules on contributions to legal aid costs.
Long stated the proposals are not final decisions. She is gathering views to develop informed reforms that enhance the justice system.
Responses to both consultations are due by 20 May, an eight-week period. Submissions can be made via the Citizen Space platform or the Department of Justice website.
