Justice Minister Naomi Long has launched a call for views to shape a new strategy aimed at reducing offending and reoffending across Northern Ireland. The consultation opens on 18 June 2026 and closes on 13 August 2026.

The initiative marks the first step in developing the strategy. Input is being sought from communities, frontline services, and those with direct experience of the justice system, including victims and survivors of crime. The Department of Justice has invited responses from individuals, voluntary organisations, academics, and members of the public.

Minister Long stated that the strategy is being developed during a period of significant pressure on public finances. She stressed the importance of focusing on interventions that work, intervening early to prevent harm, and making the best possible use of existing resources.

She emphasised the need for a whole-system approach, grounded in evidence and partnership working, with the goal of reducing harm, improving public safety, and creating better life chances. The views gathered will inform the longer-term strategy and ensure it reflects a broad range of perspectives.
