Economy Minister Backs Ulster University Expansion in Londonderry Amid Funding Concerns
Northern Ireland's Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald remains committed to expanding Ulster University's campus in Londonderry to 10,000 students by 2032. The campus currently has 6,500 students. Her department described the project as a top priority.
Department official Ian Snowden told Stormont's economy committee on Tuesday that an extra 40 million pounds per year would be needed to support growth at the Londonderry campus and another at Coleraine. He stated the funds could come from Executive reallocation or higher student fees.
The Department for the Economy said Archibald has rejected fee increases beyond inflation. The department plans to collaborate with Executive colleagues on funding solutions that avoid extra costs for students.
Student numbers at the campus, formerly known as Magee, have risen 22% since the Executive's restoration. The 10,000-student goal appears in the 2020 New Decade New Approach agreement and Stormont's programme of government.
A taskforce established in 2024 develops an action plan for the expansion. Taskforce chair Stephen Kelly said the minister determines budget allocations. He noted Archibald is in the United States and will decide on investments upon her return next week.
