Ulster Unionist MLA Criticises Irish Government Over Legacy Issues and Foreign Policy
Upper Bann MLA Doug Beattie of the Ulster Unionist Party criticised the Irish Government for what he called double standards on legacy issues from the Troubles and current foreign policy.
Beattie stated that the Irish Government maintains the Troubles did not concern them and left truth, justice, and accountability to the UK Government. He claimed they established no such mechanisms themselves.
He asserted Irish territory served as a safe haven for terrorists during the Troubles, enabling attacks on UK citizens. Beattie added that in the early 1970s the Irish Government assisted with arms for the IRA and blocked extradition of suspects wanted in the UK.
Beattie pointed to the Middle East conflict, noting the Irish Government criticises Israel, the US, and previously the UK for operations there. He said Irish airspace and Shannon Airport allow US movement of personnel, equipment, and munitions to the Middle East and North Africa.
He argued this involvement undermines Ireland's neutrality claims.
Beattie noted Sinn Féin criticises the Irish Government on this facilitation but has not pledged in manifestos or media statements to end it or stop Royal Navy and Royal Air Force use of Irish waters and airspace for operations including the Iceland-Greenland gap and protection of underwater cables.
He remarked that media coverage of these criticisms of Ireland tends to be one-sided.
