Broughshane Supermarket Celebrates 70 Years of Family Operation
A family-run supermarket in Broughshane has reached 70 years in business. McNeill’s ViVOXTRA began operations in 1955 with a grocery delivery van serving households around Ballymena. The following year, the family bought a property on Main Street in Broughshane, where the store now operates.
James McNeill started the business. His son, Alistair McNeill, manages it today. James McNeill credited local customers for their long-term support. Alistair McNeill noted improvements from a refurbishment completed in August 2023, including electronic shelf labels and self-checkouts.
The family invested about £5 million in store upgrades and expansions over the decades. The supermarket employs 35 local staff members. It stocks fresh groceries from nearby suppliers such as Gilbert Hood in Broughshane, Dougies Goodies, The Pastry Box, RJ Kerr’s Bakery, and Barr’s Butchers in Ballymena.
Staff and customers raised £7,300 for Friends of the Cancer Centre over the past two years. The store supports community charities. Current store manager Sandra Currie and assistant manager Andrew Thompson joined James McNeill and his wife Margaret in marking the anniversary.
