Bertie Carson, the inaugural principal of St John’s Primary School in Moy, County Tyrone, died on February 27, 2026, at Nazareth Care Home. He was 100 years old.

Carson served as headmaster for 26 years, from his appointment in 1963 until retirement in June 1989. He took up the role after teaching in Holywood, County Down. The school opened in 1965 following the merger of local boys’ and girls’ national schools. Carson oversaw the coordination of the new facility and taught pupils in the Parochial Hall during construction.

His wife, May Carson, also taught at the school until her death. The couple lived in Jockey Lane and raised a family there. Carson helped found the Moy Citizens’ Association in 1964, which ran community events and charitable activities.

St John’s Primary School issued a statement noting Carson’s lasting impact on pupils, staff, and families. Former pupils and colleagues recalled his tenure positively around his 100th birthday in January 2026. The school extended condolences to the Carson family.
