Fermanagh First Responders Seek Funds for Emergency Equipment
The Lower Erne Community First Responders group operates across much of Fermanagh county with 16 volunteers. Formed in 2021, it functions within the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service Community First Responder Scheme. Members receive training in first aid and CPR from the ambulance service, along with preparation for cardiac arrests, strokes, and breathing issues.
Volunteers reach rural incidents ahead of ambulances to start treatment and calm patients and families. Their presence allows control centre staff to handle other calls without repeated updates from anxious relatives. In cardiac arrest cases, on-site trained help frees staff for additional emergencies.
Chairwoman Kate Crane noted that the group assists ambulance teams by initiating care right away. This approach cuts demands on control operations and delivers reassurance during waits.
Each volunteer needs about £2000 in specialist gear, including defibrillators at £1500 apiece. The group depends on local donations and business contributions to cover these costs.
Upcoming events include a pub quiz at Blake’s of the Hollow in Enniskillen on February 27 and a flower festival at Colebrooke Park on May 15.
