New floodlights have been installed at Newtownstewart Castle, making the historic site visible after dark. Derry City and Strabane District Council, working with the Historic Environment Division, secured a power connection and placed a series of uplighters to illuminate the surviving masonry.

The project is part of the Newtownstewart Town Centre Regeneration Plan 2025, which aims to celebrate heritage assets, improve visitor experience, and strengthen local identity. It also supports the council's Heritage Plan objectives to protect and promote the district's heritage.

The scheme complements recent improvements in the town centre, including a heritage paint scheme, new seating, and planting.

Funding came from the COVID Recovery Small Settlements Programme, a collaborative effort involving the Department for Communities, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, and the Department for Infrastructure, in partnership with local councils.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais, said the castle is one of the area's most recognisable heritage landmarks. The lighting enhances the castle's appearance and draws attention to Newtownstewart's rich history and heritage.
