Derry's Halloween festival will mark its 40th anniversary with a five-day programme from October 28 to November 1. The event is expected to attract significant visitor numbers to the city.

The festival programme was launched at an event where a new Tourism Action Plan for Derry and Strabane was also unveiled. The plan, titled Shaping Our Tourism Future 2026-2031, sets out priorities for tourism growth in the district.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Grace Uí Niallais said the tourism plan provides a clear framework for future development and thanked partners for their support. She noted that the 40th anniversary provides an opportunity to demonstrate the region's tourism strengths.

Tourism Northern Ireland Chief Executive Laura McCorry said the tourism plan brings together the district's culture, heritage, events and landscapes. Tourism Ireland Chief Executive Alice Mansergh said the region has a distinctive offering and mentioned an upcoming documentary co-produced by Tourism Ireland featuring Derry Halloween.

A mural commemorating the festival's history was unveiled as part of the launch. The artwork was created by local arts collective Peaball and is intended as a lasting legacy piece for the city.

The festival programme includes the Awakening the Walled City Trail, which will take place on a section of the city's historic walls and will feature aerial performance, music, fire performances and visual spectacles.

Other announced attractions include Witchy Wonderland, Samhain Sisters, Walter's Wake, and Through the Veil. The Carnival Parade will be produced by the Inishowen Carnival Initiative and will take place on Halloween night.

The Guildhall will host children's entertainment and sensory-friendly experiences beneath Luke Jerram's Gaia installation. The Heart of Samhain area in Guildhall Square, Waterloo Place and Harbour Square will offer live music, street theatre and food.

Derry City and Strabane District Council said additional investment has been directed towards local artists, performers and cultural organisations for this year's festival.

The festival is delivered by the council with support from Tourism Northern Ireland and The Executive Office. Booking accommodation and ticketed experiences early is advised due to anticipated demand.
