The Department for the Economy has opened a public appointment competition for the role of Chair of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland. The position is expected to run for up to four years, starting on or after 1 January 2027.

The successful candidate will lead the council through a period of organisational change, including delivery of its 2026-2032 Corporate Plan and possible new statutory duties. The role requires strategic leadership, governance assurance, and external influence.

The role demands approximately 1.5 days per week and pays £26,656 annually, a figure currently under review. No academic qualifications are needed, but applicants must provide evidence of competence against four essential criteria.

The closing date for applications is noon on 29 October. Late applications will not be accepted. The Department said it encourages applications from people with disabilities, minority ethnic communities, and rural backgrounds, groups currently under-represented on the board.

Applicants with a disability will be offered a guaranteed interview if they meet the essential criteria. The appointment will be made on merit after an open competition involving an application form and interview.

The Consumer Council is Northern Ireland's statutory independent consumer body, working to ensure consumer protection legislation and regulation operate effectively. The new chair will address challenges such as cost-of-living pressures, growth of digital markets, and transition to net zero.

Application details are available on the Department's website, or by emailing pau@economy-ni.gov.uk.
