Two men have been fined for speeding in separate incidents in Derry and Castledawson.

Emmet O'Connor, 22, of Woodlee, Derry, was fined £1,000 and given five penalty points after being detected travelling at 89mph in a 50mph zone on May 8.

District Judge Ted Magill described the speed as excessive and said it was fortunate no other driver was inconvenienced. He noted O'Connor had a good job, which he would lose if disqualified from driving.

In a separate case, Colum Robert Harkin, 50, of Earhart Park, Londonderry, was fined £100 with a £15 offender's levy and three penalty points after his works van was detected at 75mph in a 50mph speed restriction zone on the Glenshane Road, Castledawson, on January 12.

A defence lawyer told the court Harkin lost concentration after coming off the motorway and slowed down immediately when he realised his speed. District Judge Alan White imposed a financial penalty.
