Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has said the Foyle Pride festival is a highlight of Derry’s calendar and stressed that the event functions as both a celebration and a protest.

Mr Eastwood recalled taking part in the first Foyle Pride parade during his time as Mayor. He said the festival allows the city to show solidarity with LGBT+ people and to stand against attempts to roll back hard-won rights and equality.

He paid tribute to the organisers and encouraged people to attend events and show support.

The Foyle Pride Festival will hold a series of events on Saturday, August 29. Family Crafts will run from 12pm to 5pm at The Playhouse, free of charge.

The annual parade will assemble at 1pm at the North West Transport Hub and depart at 2pm. Afterwards, live music will take place at the Guildhall from 3pm to 5pm, with a family fun area at the rear of the building.

An official closing party will be held at Sandinos from 7pm, with tickets priced at £10. The event is for over-18s and will feature artists The Camp Vamps, David Hoyle and Dusty Grooves. A silent disco will also run at The Playhouse from 9pm to 11pm.
