A world record attempt across the North Channel will launch from Ballyholme Yacht Club this August. Three Nacra foiling teams from the UK will try to set a new fastest time between Ballyholme, County Down, and Portpatrick, Scotland.

The current record of 1 hour, 30 minutes and 41 seconds was established in 2023 by Team GB Olympic silver medallists John Gimson and Anna Burnett. Their crossing used the Olympic class Nacra 17 and was supported by Belfast-based Artemis Technologies, with the electric foiling vessel Pioneer as an escort.

The challengers - Kevin Dutch and Dave Banner, Mark Sewell and Will Smith, and Chris and Marcus King - plan their attempt for August 7 to 9. They will race Nacra 20 Carbon catamarans, capable of speeds over 25 knots, on a stretch of water known for powerful tides, steep waves and unpredictable conditions.

If successful, the time will be submitted for recognition by Guinness World Records.
