DUP Leader Presses for Irish Cooperation on Troubles Commission Access
DUP Leader Gavin Robinson has urged the Secretary of State to obtain full Irish Government cooperation for the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR).
Speaking after Northern Ireland Questions in the House of Commons, Mr Robinson said the Commission’s head, Sir Declan Morgan, has made it clear that access to unredacted material held by the Irish Government is essential for thorough investigations.
Mr Robinson accused the Secretary of State of relying on generalities and argued that expressing hope for cooperation was insufficient. He said families deserve certainty, not warm words.
He called on the Secretary of State to press the Irish Government to introduce legislative changes that would provide the Commission with the access it requires. Evidence presented to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, he said, shows that neither the Irish Government’s draft legislation nor amendments before the UK Parliament currently address this need.
Mr Robinson also pointed to delays in the Government’s own legacy timetable. He highlighted that a remedial order due by the end of June had been missed and other milestones had passed without delivery, raising questions over whether legacy legislation could be completed this year.
To deliver a legally robust framework that commands confidence, Mr Robinson stressed, the Commission must have access to all relevant information on both sides of the border. Without it, he warned, the process risks being incomplete and failing those families still pursuing answers.
