Sperrin AONB gains first management plan after nearly six decades
The Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1968, has received its first dedicated management plan, almost 60 years after its creation.
The plan, covering 2026 to 2036, was launched by the Sperrins Partnership in collaboration with Mid Ulster District Council and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). It was funded through DAERA’s Environment Fund and shaped by an 18-month consultation involving community groups, landowners, businesses, and statutory bodies.
The Sperrins is one of eight AONBs in Northern Ireland and was the only one without a management plan. Officials say the new framework will coordinate conservation, sustainable development, and community engagement across the region.
The management plan sets out priorities including safeguarding natural and built heritage, supporting biodiversity recovery, fostering community involvement, and encouraging sustainable tourism. An accompanying action plan outlines specific projects for the first five years, to 2031.
Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Andrew Muir described the plan as providing a clear framework to conserve the nationally important landscape while supporting thriving communities and economic opportunities. He added that the department looked forward to working with partners to deliver its ambitions.
Councillor Sean Clarke, chair of the Sperrins Partnership, called the launch a major milestone for the area and its communities. He said the plan was developed through extensive collaboration and stressed that its success will depend on continued engagement from landowners, businesses, volunteers, and statutory partners.
The plan acknowledges environmental pressures and changing land use demands. It aims to attract further investment to fund priority actions over the next decade, with progress monitored and reported publicly to ensure accountability.
The documents are available via the Sperrins Partnership website, and the partnership intends to maintain strong links with stakeholders as delivery gets under way.
