Western Trust chair Dr Tom Frawley dies suddenly
Dr Tom Frawley, the chair of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, has died suddenly, the trust has announced.
He had led the trust since 2023, following a long career in public service. Earlier in his career, he served as chief executive of the former Western Health and Social Services Board and held other senior NHS leadership roles.
Dr Frawley also served as Northern Ireland Ombudsman for 20 years and was vice-chair of the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
Karen Hargan, chief executive of the Western Trust, described him as a highly regarded public servant who provided outstanding leadership. She said he was admired for his integrity, insight, and sound judgement, as well as his kindness and ability to connect with people.
She added that Dr Frawley cared deeply about staff, patients, clients and the wider community, and was a passionate advocate for health and social care services across the west of Northern Ireland. His contribution would be remembered with gratitude, she said.
Ms Hargan offered heartfelt condolences to his wife Marie, children Rachel, Joe and Dan, and the wider family circle, and said he would be greatly missed by friends and colleagues across the public sector.
MLA Diana Armstrong also expressed sadness at his death. She noted his dedicated service to health and public life in Northern Ireland, and said his contribution to the Western Trust would be long remembered. She extended sympathy to his family, friends and trust colleagues.
