The Western Health and Social Care Trust has appointed Karen Hargan as its new Chief Executive. She will assume the position on May 1, 2026, succeeding Neil Guckian, who retires at the end of April after nearly five years in the role.

Hargan currently serves as the Trust's Director of Human Resources and Organisation Development, a position she has held since 2021. Dr Tom Frawley, Chair of the Trust, stated that the Board selected her after a rigorous process. He noted her leadership qualities and commitment to the communities served by the Trust.

Frawley highlighted upcoming financial pressures and rising service demands in health and social care. He expressed confidence in Hargan's ability to foster partnerships with staff, patients, communities, trade unions, local government, and regional partners.

Hargan acknowledged the financial and operational challenges facing the Trust and their effects on staff and communities. She stressed the need for collaboration across the organisation and with partners to maintain quality, safety, and sustainability.

Frawley thanked Guckian for his leadership during difficult times. He praised Guckian's compassion, clarity, resilience, and contributions to collaboration and reform across Northern Ireland's health and social care sector.
