Utility Regulator student secures second place in Ulster University awards
A placement student at the Utility Regulator has been awarded second place in the Ulster University Business School Placement Awards. Breanna McLaughlin, who worked within the Networks and Energy Futures Team, was recognised for her contributions during her placement year.
The awards celebrate the accomplishments of placement students and the impact they make within their host organisations. McLaughlin’s submission, a video produced in collaboration with the regulator’s communications team, showcased a typical day in her role and the learning she gained. Over 150 entries were submitted.
McLaughlin said her placement was highly beneficial, noting that she entered with no prior knowledge of regulation but developed her understanding and confidence through support from colleagues. She added that the experience has prepared her for her final university year by bridging theory and practical application.
Jody O’Boyle, Electricity Regulation Manager and McLaughlin’s supervisor, praised her enthusiasm and openness to learning. He noted that the Utility Regulator has provided placement opportunities for more than a decade, allowing students to apply their degree knowledge in electricity, gas and water regulation.
The regulator plans to recruit for the 2027-2028 placement later this year. Interested candidates can contact info@uregni.gov.uk for information.
