Department of Health Seeks Chair for NI Dental Committee
The Department of Health is seeking an experienced general dental practitioner to chair the Dental Committee of the Business Services Organisation (BSO). The initial term is four years, with possible reappointment, and the role requires a commitment of around 20 days annually.
The BSO was established in 2009 to provide regional business support and specialist services across Northern Ireland’s Health and Social Care sector. Under the General Dental Services Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993, the BSO must constitute a Dental Committee to advise both the BSO and the Strategic Planning and Performance Group on the delivery of their functions.
The Dental Committee examines applications from dentists for prior approval to carry out certain treatments, as set out in the Statement of Dental Remuneration. It can also investigate cases where a dentist’s treatment pattern differs markedly from peers. Without satisfactory explanation, the committee may require that dentist to seek approval for all future treatments.
The chair will provide leadership, ensure decisions are evidence-based and cost-effective, and oversee the development of protocols for high-quality decision-making. Appointment is made by the Department of Health.
Candidates must be dentists currently in general dental services, registered with the General Dental Council, with at least five years’ experience in the last ten providing general dental services in Northern Ireland. Previous committee work experience is required. Those under investigation by a regulator are ineligible.
Remuneration is £290 per day plus travel and other allowances according to HSC rates. Interested practitioners can request a nomination form by emailing gdoscorrespondence@health-ni.gov.uk, quoting reference BSO 1/26. Completed forms must be received by 5pm on Wednesday 17 June 2026. Late nominations will not be accepted.
