Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has committed £90,000 to deliver the Cycling Proficiency Scheme this financial year, with more than 290 schools registering interest.

At Killean Primary School in County Armagh, the minister presented certificates to pupils who completed the programme, which aims to build cycling confidence and road safety awareness among children.

Teachers deliver the scheme in primary and special schools, with the Department for Infrastructure providing resources, instructor training, and support. Pupils learn how to perform manoeuvres, conduct helmet and bicycle checks, and use gears properly, while also being taught the importance of observation while cycling.

Minister Kimmins highlighted cycling’s health and transport benefits, stressing the value of early education in safe cycling. She said the scheme equips young people with the skills to make safe decisions on the road.
