Infrastructure Minister Launches Road Safety Campaigns Targeting Speeding and Driver Behaviour
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins launched two road safety campaigns in early March 2026. The initiatives target speeding and driver behaviour, the leading causes of death and serious injury on Northern Ireland roads. By that time, 15 people had died in road incidents that year.
Kimmins said too many deaths occur on roads. She noted recent weeks made this clear. Families face lasting grief from such losses. She wants all road users to drive safely and calls for discussion on driving habits.
One campaign addresses routine choices that cause crashes. It covers tailgating, lack of attention and short distractions. Kimmins said these acts appear small but lead to severe outcomes. It shows how quick risks turn fatal.
The other campaign tackles high speeds, mainly on rural roads. It stresses drivers cannot keep control at excess speeds. Speed cuts reaction times and lengthens stopping distances.
Advertisements run on TV, radio, outdoor displays and online. They aim at younger drivers. The Department for Infrastructure reviews speed rules, covering dual carriageways, rural roads, heavy goods vehicle limits and 20mph zones. Kimmins invited public views through consultation.
The new campaigns add to prior efforts on school bus safety, driver visibility and drug driving risks.
