Staff in emergency departments across the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust were recognised on Emergency Medicine Day for their work in treating patients.

The day highlights the role of doctors, nurses, paramedics and support staff who manage urgent cases.

Emergency Department Sister Amy Mackin said staff handle varied cases including mental health presentations and critically unwell adults and children. She noted the department works with multiple teams including ambulance services, police, social workers and hospital specialties.

Registrar Dr Matthew Copeland said the role involves caring for patients in distress and that teamwork helps manage pressure in the department. He said the day provides an opportunity to note positives such as quality care and staff learning.

Deputy Sister Katherine Poole said no two days are the same and encouraged others to consider the specialty.

Specialty Doctor Dr Rupert Shuttleworth said the team supports each other amid high workloads and that services face ongoing pressure.

The Trust stated the day celebrates the commitment of emergency care teams.
