US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated there was slight progress during recent talks with Iran.

The comments came days after President Donald Trump said he had called off a planned military strike to allow negotiations to continue.

Rubio spoke ahead of a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, where the alliance is expected to discuss its potential role in policing the Strait of Hormuz after the war ends.

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, affecting shipments of oil, gas, fertiliser and other petroleum products.

The United States has blocked Iranian ports and redirected 94 commercial vessels and disabled four others since mid-April.

Rubio criticised Iran for attempting to create a tolling system on the strait, stating no other country supports such a measure.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched attacks on Iranian military facilities and Iranian-backed militias in Iraq during the war.

The Iraqi prime minister ordered an investigation following claims that attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE originated from Iraqi territory.
