The Department of Justice is engaging with Irish authorities to improve support for victims of domestic abuse living near the border.

A spokesperson said officials have started exploratory discussions on cross-border initiatives to share best practice and provide more aligned victim support.

The talks aim to address gaps where survivors in border areas face challenges due to differences in legal and policing systems.

One Fermanagh woman described being ordered by a Belfast High Court to return to the Republic after fleeing with her children.

She reported repeated violence including headbutts and threats against her and her children during the relationship.

The woman said reporting the abuse led to slow progress partly because police services on both sides do not coordinate closely.

She called for better daily or weekly liaison between forces to speed up extradition orders and reduce delays for victims waiting years for justice.
