Report Warns Older Private Renters in Northern Ireland Face Growing Housing Insecurity
A new report from the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland states that around 17,600 people aged 65 and over rent privately in the province.
The findings indicate that this group faces rising rents, limited income options and homes that often lack adaptations for mobility or health needs.
Landlords currently face no obligation to permit or fund changes such as replacing baths with showers.
Social housing waiting lists have grown, leaving fewer alternatives when private tenancies end.
The report projects that the number of older private renters could rise substantially by 2040 if trends continue.
Commissioner Siobhan Casey said older renters live with the constant threat of eviction and have few ways to increase income or secure suitable housing.
The report recommends stronger protections for private renters and measures to ensure homes meet the needs of an ageing population.
