The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency registered 251 drug-related deaths in 2024. Of these, 219 qualified as drug misuse deaths.

Ulster Unionist Deputy Leader and Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Diana Armstrong addressed the figures. She noted that each death impacts a family and friend network.

Armstrong pointed to a decade-long increase in such deaths across Northern Ireland. She identified easy access to substances in rural areas of Fermanagh and South Tyrone.

The MLA stated that drug issues extend beyond urban zones into remote communities. She linked higher death rates to areas of deprivation.

Armstrong called for efforts in prevention, treatment, recovery, and enforcement. She expressed frustration over limited progress from existing initiatives.
