Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced a £250,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme for the A6 Castledawson Roundabout. The work starts on Monday, 18 May 2026, and covers a short section of the A54 Magherafelt Road.

The roundabout closes to traffic during specified periods for the works. Translink services at Castledawson Park & Ride continue during night-time operations. On Sunday, 24 May, Translink suspends services at the site from 6 am to 7 pm. Users should go to Maghera or Toome Park & Ride instead.

Signed diversion routes operate during closures. Northbound A6 traffic for Maghera, Dungiven or Derry diverts via B183 Hillhead Road, Knockloughrim Road, Hillhead Road and Knockloughrim Link Road. Northbound A6 traffic for Magherafelt diverts off A6 Dual via B183 Hillhead Road, B182 Hillhead Road, Blackpark Road, Creagh Road and B18 Aughrim Road.

Southbound A6 Glenshane Road traffic for Castledawson, Magherafelt, Toome or Belfast diverts via Knockloughrim Link Road, Hillhead Road, Knockloughrim Road and B183 Hillhead Road. Magherafelt town traffic for Maghera and beyond uses Tobermore.

The A54 Magherafelt Road closes at the roundabout from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on Monday, 25 May, with local diversions. Road users face delays and must follow temporary restrictions.

Kimmins stated the investment aids road users in Castledawson and Magherafelt areas and supports businesses and communities. She thanked residents, businesses and commuters for patience.

Works complete by Monday, 25 May 2026, subject to weather.
