Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced resurfacing schemes for the A23 Ballygowan Road in Belfast and the A5 Beltany Road in Omagh, with combined investment exceeding £1.1 million.

On the A23 Ballygowan Road, a £556,000 carriageway improvement scheme will begin on 15 August 2026. The project covers the stretch from Upper Braniel Road to 122 Ballygowan Road and includes kerb and footway upgrades.

That scheme will involve weekend closures from 7am Saturday to 7pm Sunday and weekday closures from 9.30am to 4.30pm between 15 August and 18 September 2026. A signed diversion will route traffic via the A55 Upper Knockbreda Road, A24 Saintfield Road, A7 Saintfield Road, B178 Comber Road and A23 Moneyreagh Road. People travelling to Roselawn Cemetery are advised to allow extra time.

On the A5 Beltany Road in Omagh, a £615,000 resurfacing scheme will start on Monday 17 August 2026. The work extends about 1.27 km from Castletown Road to Mellon Road.

Temporary traffic management will be in place from 17 August to 31 August 2026. Northbound traffic will be diverted via a route including the B50 Gillygooley Road, B50 Omagh Road, Main Street in Drumquin, the B50 Castlederg Road, B50 Drumquin Road, B72 Castlegore Road, B72 Lower Strabane Road, Castlederg, B72 Strabane Road and B72 Fyfin Road to the A5. Southbound traffic will use the B46 Plumbridge Road, B46 Killymore Road, B48, Gortin, Glenpark Road, B46 Gortin Road, U1528 Strathroy Road, B48 Strathroy Link Road and B48 Derry Road to the A5.

During daily closures from 24 August to 31 August between 7.30am and 6.30pm, motorists heading to the Ulster American Folk Park should follow the northbound diversion and use the A5 from Newtownstewart. The carriageway will reopen at 4pm on Saturday 29 August to allow normal access to the Folk Park for its 50th anniversary concert. Motorists going to the Sperrin Restaurant or Mountjoy Service Station should use the southbound diversion and the A5 from Omagh.

Kimmins said the investments would deliver significant benefits for residents and road users, and she thanked residents, businesses and commuters for their patience. The department said some delays are expected and asked road users to comply with temporary restrictions. Subject to weather, the Belfast scheme is due for substantial completion by 18 September 2026 and the Omagh scheme by 31 August 2026.
