DUP leader Gavin Robinson has called on the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland to issue guidance confirming that a UK Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex applies locally. The court ruled on Thursday that EU rights do not automatically override UK legislation.

Robinson described the judgment as removing excuses for delaying clarity on the law's application in Northern Ireland. He stated that public bodies, civil service, councils, and schools need this guidance, and the public expects it.

The Supreme Court previously defined sex in law by biology rather than self-declared gender identity. Robinson said the ruling clarifies that Article 2 of the Windsor Framework cannot import broader rights interpretations.

He criticised Sinn Fein, Alliance, and SDLP for avoiding basic facts and urged a reset to end confusion among public bodies.

A spokesperson for the Equality Commission said the organisation sought court clarification on applying the For Women Scotland judgment locally. They noted the court agreed on 27 January 2026 to hold the matter until the Supreme Court judgment in Dillon and others, with review scheduled for 1 June 2026. The commission will assess the judgment's implications beforehand.
