Northern Ireland Invests £10.7 Million in AI Tools for All School Teachers
Northern Ireland's Education Minister Paul Givan has announced a £10.7 million investment to provide generative AI tool licences to every teacher in the region's schools. The programme includes training and guidance to support safe and effective use of the technology.
The initiative distributes licences through the EdIS managed education technology service. It aims to reduce administrative tasks for teachers and allow more focus on classroom activities.
Givan described the project as a key advancement for education in Northern Ireland and an investment in the teaching profession. He noted that an independent review of teacher workload identified the potential benefits of generative AI.
The minister prioritised the funding to equip teachers with tools that cut time on admin work and aid lesson planning. He emphasised providing professional learning to increase teachers' knowledge, confidence and skills in using the tools.
Department guidance will cover safe AI application in schools. An online platform will offer learning materials and enable schools to exchange experiences.
Givan stated the programme supports teacher wellbeing, eases workload and promotes a modern education system.
