Northern Ireland's Education Minister Paul Givan announced a £10.7 million investment to supply generative AI tools and training to all school teachers. The programme provides licences for every teaching staff member across schools in the region.

The initiative delivers the tools through the EdIS managed education technology service. It includes guidance for schools on safe and effective AI use. An online learning platform offers resources and facilitates sharing of experiences among schools.

Givan stated the project aims to reduce teacher workload by cutting administrative tasks. He noted it supports planning, enhances teaching, and improves efficiency and wellbeing. The minister highlighted the Independent Review of Teacher Workload, which identified the transformative potential of generative AI.

Every teacher will receive professional learning to build knowledge, confidence, and skills in using the tools. Givan emphasised that many teachers already use publicly available AI tools. He prioritised secure access and support to ensure safe application.

The minister described the programme as a practical investment in teachers and the profession's sustainability. It equips educators with trusted tools, training, and guidance to focus on teaching and learning in a modern system.
