Assembly Unanimously Backs Motion for Jasmin's Law on Drug Sentences
The Northern Ireland Assembly unanimously backed a motion on Tuesday for Jasmin's Law. The proposed measure calls for harsher sentences for drug dealers who supply vulnerable individuals, treating such supply as an aggravating factor if it leads to injury or death.
SDLP MLA Mark H. Durkan tabled the motion. It honors Jasmin Duddy, who died at age 21 on February 2, 2023, after taking pregabalin and bromazepam. Her mother, Pauline Duddy from Derry, has campaigned for the law since then.
Pauline Duddy watched the debate from the public gallery. She described feeling deep pride and emotion during the proceedings. She stated that the campaign keeps her going amid daily grief over her daughter's loss.
Mark H. Durkan credited Pauline Duddy's determination in turning personal loss into advocacy. He noted her efforts give voice to affected families.
Sinn Féin MLA Emma Sheerin praised Pauline Duddy's work to prevent similar suffering for other families. DUP MLA Paul Frew, Justice Committee chair, said she has done extensive work in her daughter's memory.
Alliance's Andrew Muir spoke for Justice Minister Naomi Long. He said the minister has met Pauline Duddy several times and commended her advocacy. The minister's sentencing policy review will examine practices for drug misuse offences in Northern Ireland.
