Newcastle Leisure Centre Redevelopment Plans Presented at First Public Consultation
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council held its first public consultation on plans to redevelop the Newcastle Centre site with new leisure facilities. The event took place on Monday.
Tentative designs include a 20-metre three-lane swimming pool. The project carries a £12m budget and targets completion in December 2029.
McAdam Design, the appointed consultancy team, hosted the event titled 'Framing the Question'. Display boards noted that no planning application has been submitted. Community input will shape future proposals before the planning process begins.
The development seeks to upgrade community facilities, improve the Central Promenade, increase local economic activity and create a modern leisure space. Plans explore accessible areas for all ages and abilities, a visitor draw to boost footfall and better public spaces.
Martin Hare, managing director of McAdam Design, addressed attendee concerns about site size and parking. He described the Newcastle Centre as an iconic underused building in need of repairs. Hare stated that the budget allows for a pool only at this location.
The project involves refurbishing the main building and adding an extension for the swimming facility.
