Castlederg Fundraiser Prepares for London Marathon to Aid Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Liam McHugh, a long-time cystic fibrosis fundraiser from Castlederg in Tyrone, will run in this year's London Marathon. Messages from patients still seriously ill and unable to access certain medications motivate him.
McHugh receives ongoing calls and emails from these individuals. He plans to think of them during the race's difficult sections. The outreach from patients prompted his return to running after he considered retirement.
Over the years, McHugh has raised close to £450,000 for cystic fibrosis research. He has run numerous marathons but does not track the exact number. Severe pain once halted his training, but treatment from a specialist in Cookstown allowed him to resume pain-free.
Ann Marie McGlynn, a local athlete, referred him to the Cookstown specialist. His photograph will appear at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust stand entrance during the London Marathon Expo.
