Translink Public Transport Fares Held Steady for Second Year
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has decided to keep Translink bus and rail fares at current levels for a second consecutive year. The move comes during financial pressures on the public transport network.
Kimmins stated that increasing fares now would add strain to workers and families amid higher fuel and oil prices. She noted that many passengers use buses and trains daily for work, education, and essential services.
The minister recognised challenges in the budget environment for Translink and the public sector. She described the fare freeze as a result of careful planning.
Public transport supports the economy and communities, according to Kimmins. Passenger numbers have increased, indicating demand.
Maintaining fares helps keep public transport affordable as petrol and diesel prices rise, Kimmins said.
She plans to collaborate with Translink to address ongoing financial issues and maintain services within available funding.
