North Coast Rents Rise 48% in Five Years, MLA Warns of Community Strain
Average rents on Northern Ireland's North Coast increased by 48% over five years, according to new figures. The data records a rise from £548 in the first quarter of 2020 to £811 in the fourth quarter of 2025, an addition of £263 per month.
Cara Hunter, MLA, stated that the increase matches experiences of local renters facing higher costs alongside reduced housing supply. She noted that the jump exceeds what residents can afford, adding significant pressure on individuals and families.
Hunter highlighted impacts on young people seeking to start careers or establish homes locally, as well as on workers, families, and essential staff unable to find housing. She pointed to effects on the economy and public services.
The MLA attributed the situation to insufficient rental properties, increased competition, and resulting price escalation. She called for Executive measures to expand social and affordable housing, assist renters, and reform the private rental sector.
