Ciaran Hogan, aged 40 and of no fixed abode, appeared in Derry court charged with theft from a Supervalu store.

The incident took place on April 13 when Hogan took eight packets of Doherty's Special Mince valued at £50.

Defence barrister Sinead Rogan told the court that Hogan expressed regret to police upon being stopped.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan imposed a five-month custodial sentence, suspended for one year.

The judge also ordered Hogan to pay £50 in compensation.
