Ards and North Down Council Approves £170,000 Bowtown Play Park Upgrade
Ards and North Down Council has approved a £170,000 refurbishment for Bowtown play park at Abbot Gardens in Newtownards. The decision reallocates funds originally set for Glenford play park amid delays in a related park and ride scheme.
Environmental Services Director Graeme Bannister informed councillors that Translink plans to develop the William Street site in Newtownards, but payment for the land remains outstanding. Negotiations continue over the site's boundaries, delaying the new Glenford play park funded by the sale of a former leisure centre.
Alderman Stephen McIlveen proposed advancing the Bowtown project, next on the 2026/27 refurbishment list. Most councillors supported the motion, with a further report planned once William Street issues resolve.
SDLP Councillor Joe Boyle opposed the change, arguing it bypassed an agreed council strategy. He noted a prior similar proposal by Alderman Robert Adair had failed in the environment committee.
Alderman Adair clarified he presented the earlier amendment for McIlveen, who does not serve on that committee. Deputy Mayor Vicky Moore stated the Alliance Party backed the proposal, citing local knowledge alongside an independent assessment.
Ulster Unionist Councillor Richard Smart described Bowtown play park as the area's sole facility with insufficient accessible equipment. Green Party Councillor Lauren Kendall stressed the need for accessibility factors like topography and distance in assessments.
