A 40-year-old man from Garden Street in Magherafelt has been placed on probation after conviction for assaulting two police officers and disorderly behaviour.

Ivans Kalnins faced charges related to an incident on Union Road in Magherafelt on July 10.

District Judge Conor Heaney reviewed bodycam footage and stated familiarity with the case details.

The judge noted that Kalnins could report any alleged assault on him to authorities.

Heaney determined that probation would assist Kalnins with alcohol issues, impulsive behaviour, and poor decision making.

A defence lawyer informed the court that Kalnins had spent two months in custody linked to the matter, which followed an alleged assault on the defendant.

The lawyer described Kalnins's response to police as inappropriate and requested leniency.
