Minister Lyons Visits Armagh Observatory Redevelopment Site
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons visited Armagh Observatory and Planetarium to assess redevelopment plans. He met project partners including Professor Michael Burton, the director, Dr Paul Mullan from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and David Algie from Arup.
The project seeks to update facilities for astronomical research and tourism. It covers restoration of Grade A listed historic buildings. It also includes maintenance of scientific instruments and manuscripts over 500 years old.
Funding comes from the Department for Communities and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The fund named Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon as a Heritage Place.
Lyons said the project secures the site's future as a scientific and cultural asset. He added it modernises the venue and aids research, learning, and visitors.
Burton said the investment preserves heritage and keeps global research status. He thanked the minister's department and the heritage fund.
Mullan said the site holds value for heritage, research, and education in Armagh. Algie said the plans transform the centre sustainably for research, education, and economic growth.
