NI Childcare Subsidy Scheme Extended to 2026-27 with Higher Caps and Provider Payments
Northern Ireland Education Minister Paul Givan has extended the Childcare Subsidy Scheme to the 2026-27 period. The subsidy cap will increase by 10% from 1 April 2026 to cover expected rises in childcare costs. Childcare providers in the scheme will receive higher administrative payments to offset their operational expenses.
The scheme launched in September 2024. It provides a 15% subsidy on childcare costs for working parents of children aged 0 to 11. Registered providers include childminders, daycares, playgroups, schools, and approved home childcares that participate in Tax-Free Childcare.
Givan stated the scheme has delivered over £25 million in savings to 20,000 working families since its start. Combined with Tax-Free Childcare, total savings for these families exceed £50 million. The subsidy rate stays at 15% for now, subject to future budget and strategy changes.
The Executive budget for 2026-27 remains unfinalised. An Early Learning and Childcare Strategy consultation is ongoing. Givan noted the scheme offers essential support to eligible families. The Early Years Organisation administers the programme and will notify providers of the updated cap and payments soon.
