Teenagers Run Music Gigs Through OhYeah Centre Programme
Teenagers aged 14 to 18 run music gigs as part of the Volume Control programme at the OhYeah Centre in Belfast. The initiative has operated for almost 20 years. Participants earn an OCN qualification in event management.
The group handles logistics, budgets, band bookings, marketing and ticket sales for themed events. Anna, 16, plans to pursue a music industry career after taking part. Jackson, 14, serves as MC at the events.
Jackson learned stress management skills through the programme after joining via a summer camp and an interview process. Willow, 15, gained knowledge of the local music scene and more confidence. Bella, 15, now considers event planning or music industry roles beyond performing.
Bella noted benefits from connecting with peers her age and developing new skills. Youth Engagement Manager Chelsea Andrews guides the participants but lets them make final event decisions. Andrews observed their confidence grow with each show.
The programme receives funding from the Ed Sheeran Foundation and the Live Trust. The next event takes place on 13 March.
