Northern Ireland Hits 47% Renewable Electricity in 2025
Northern Ireland generated 4,073 GWh of renewable electricity in the 12 months ending December 2025. This accounted for 47% of gross final electricity consumption, an increase from 44% in 2024. The data comes from a report on electricity consumption and renewable generation.
Local generation split evenly at 50% renewable and 50% non-renewable. Wind produced 72% of renewable output. Bioenergy contributed 20%, solar PV 6%, and landfill gas plus hydro and tidal each 1%.
Total electricity consumption fell to 8,755 GWh in 2025 from 9,569 GWh in 2018. The region imported a net 578 GWh of electricity, up from 92 GWh the previous year.
The figures track progress toward the Climate Change Act target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030. Northern Ireland follows a gross final electricity consumption method under its Path to Net Zero Energy strategy.
